Bobbe

In Memory of Our Friend Bobbe Morris

It is with tremendous sadness that we pass along the news that beloved friend and longtime Haus of Yarn presence Bobbe Morris passed away on Wednesday, April 26. Bobbe was a fixture on the Nashville knitting scene for forty years. Beginning with her own Bandywood Knit Shop in the 80s, she shepherded countless beginners along the knitting path and her shop was an oasis of knowledge for neophytes and experts alike. She was later instrumental in helping Carolyn Smith get Haus of Yarn open at its original location and was an invaluable presence in the shop even after we moved --right up until her retirement a couple of years ago, she dispensed knitting tips and, of course, life advice from behind the counter.

Bobbe was an accomplished pattern designer (her patterns appear in several of the 101 One-Skein Wonders volumes; check your library!), functioning as Haus of Yarn's in-house designer for many years (the current schedule of the Haus of Yarn Yearlong Knitalong features one of her designs). She believed knitting "should be relaxing and fun, magical and spiritual, with a healthy dose of whimsy thrown in." Her work appears throughout Haus of Yarn in the form of designs and knitted samples...and honestly, it's tough to find an aspect of the shop she didn't play a part in!

But all of those achievements are not why we'll miss her. She was a tremendous, funny friend, with a laugh that matched the purple streak in her hair. It's a cliché to say she never met a stranger, but it's true about Bobbe: she never met a stranger and could convince even the biggest doubters that she or he could conquer the task at hand. And her glass was always more than half-full of optimism...and sometimes a daiquiri!

When we lost Carolyn a year and a half ago, it seemed inconceivable that the shop could go on without her. But it did; her presence is woven into the fabric of the shop and that fabric gets stronger every day. Bobbe's loss stretches that fabric in unexpected directions, but knowing she helped to weave it in the first place keeps us confident that it will survive. Please take some time to drop in the shop and share with us any stories about Bobbe that you might have, and see what she was so instrumental in helping to create.

Our thoughts are with her family at this time. We know that one of Bobbe's favorite things to do in Nashville was attend the Nashville Jazz Workshop; in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the NJW in her name. You can use the following information to fill out the Support form at the NJW website.
